Untermurnthal is a district of the town of Neunburg vorm Wald in the Schwandorf district in Bavaria .

geography

Untermurnthal is about five kilometers northeast of Neunburg vorm Wald in the Murntal, a breakthrough valley of the Schwarzach that connects to the Eixendorftalsperre . Here the Schwarzach breaks through the granite bar that separates the Tertiary basin around Rötz from the Neunburg valley basin .

history

The name Moornthal, later Murnthal, comes from the swampy, boggy valley floor in which the settlement is located. It was also called Rosskopfhütte in earlier times.

From the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, Ober - Mitter- and Untermurnthal were among the largest grinding works in Germany. In 1939 they ceased operations as a result of the Belgian-Rhenish competition. After a new dam was built in 1925, the glass loops were connected to the public energy supply from 1937 and used as hydroelectric power stations to generate electricity. In 1942, due to the war, a screw factory was relocated from Nuremberg to Untermurnthal, which gave up the location again in 1945. The former mirror glass grinding and polishing plant was later leased to various companies.

Untermurnthal has been a popular holiday destination in the Neunburg vorm Wald area since the 1950s. Initially, individual rooms were rented out. Several holiday apartments have been built here since the 1970s.

On March 23, 1913, Untermurnthal was part of the parish of Neunburg vorm Wald, consisted of two houses and had 45 residents.

On December 31, 1990, Untermurnthal had four residents and belonged to the parish of Neunburg vorm Wald.

Culture and sights

In 2015, a meeting place for art, culture and social exchange was established in Untermurnthal, the Seminarium Murntal , where seminars and celebrations are held. Vernissages and art exhibitions by well-known artists take place in the old "Polier", a former operating room of the old mirror glass grinding and polishing plant.

In Untermurnthal there is a gilded, cast-iron court cross with a relief representation of a protective mantle Madonna, which was erected around 1881 and is one of the most important of its kind in the Schwandorf district today. It was restored by Robert Bergschneider.
