Luther skirt

Bishops Werner Leich and Werner Krusche in Lutherrock, 1980

The Luther skirt is a form of frock coat with features of the cassock . It is a black, single-breasted, almost knee-length, high-necked robe with a small stand-up collar . Some evangelical clergymen (today almost only bishops ) wear it as an official costume outside of the service . In the second half of the 19th century, the Luther skirt was the normal everyday clothing of the Protestant pastors . In the course of a return to traditional values in the Protestant church , the Luther skirt is now worn again by younger pastors.

The Luther skirt has nothing to do directly with Martin Luther . It did not appear until the 19th century. He received the name of the reformer afterwards as an outward expression of a faithful and church-minded Lutheranism .
