Luxury uptake
Luxury uptake ( English luxury , luxurious 'and uptake , surcharge') means something like luxurious surcharge and is a technical vocabulary from sewage technology .

Similar to the yo-yo effect on a diet , which describes weight gain to a greater extent than the previous loss, the 'Luxury Uptake' describes the ability of microorganisms in an aeration tank to absorb more phosphate than under normal conditions. The increased phosphate elimination from the wastewater results from the alternating anaerobic and aerobic zones in an aeration tank . The microorganisms come under stress, i. that is, in order to survive in the anaerobic area, they release phosphates from the organism , which creates energy . If the oxygen content then increases again, they store a 'Luxury Uptake' in addition to the previously exposed phosphates.
The total phosphorus content of the microorganisms can reach up to 5% of the dry matter .
Use
This effect is used, for example, in biological phosphate elimination to extract or retain as much phosphate as possible from wastewater.
