Luzzu bug with the typical eyes

The typical fishing boats in Malta are called Luzzus . Another very similar boat is called dgħajsa or dhajsa .

They are traditionally decorated on the bow with eyes that represent either the eye of Horus or the eyes of Osiris , the Egyptian god of the dead. These should protect the fishermen from danger. However, the boats usually have Christian names.

They are usually very colorfully painted and a popular photo opportunity for many tourists. In the past they were equipped with sails, nowadays they are powered by diesel engines. They were considered very stable and seaworthy in all weather conditions.
