Lychnology

Lychnology is a special field of archaeological research that deals with the questions of artificial light sources in antiquity and in the epochs up to the early modern period .

The name used mainly in French technical language is derived from the Greek lychnos (= lamp , chandelier, light). The International Lychnological Association (ILA) is the primary body responsible for specialist research . The object of research are the technical, economic and cultural aspects of lighting devices, i.e. the manufacture, spread and development of lamp types since the beginning in the first half of the first millennium BC.
