Lycia is a dark wave band from Tempe, Arizona , founded in 1988 by Mike VanPortfleet. Musically, elements from Gothic Rock , Dark Ambient and Noise are processed for Lycia , with recently published works being heavily influenced by the use of acoustic guitars.

history

After Mike VanPortfleet started Lycia as a solo project in 1988, Will Welch joined the project in the summer of that year. In November this was replaced by John Fair. In March 1989 the first release Wake appeared in the form of a 6-track cassette on the Orphanage Records label. The sound at that time was characterized by dominant rock guitars and rhythm patterns from the drum computer.

In 1990 John Fair left Lycia and Will Welch returned. The sound of Lycia increasingly developed in a noise- heavy direction. At the end of the same year work began on the first album Byzantine , which, however, was never released due to technical problems. Mike VanPortfleet decided to process individual fragments of the album for a second attempt. The end result was released in September 1991 under the title Ionia on the Projekt Records label and is characterized by ambient textures and very flat and atmospheric sounds.

Meanwhile, production on the next album, A Day in the Stark Corner, was already in full swing. This was released in August 1992 and is seamlessly linked to its predecessor Ionia in terms of sound technology . Soon afterwards the line-up and the sound changed again. The line up was expanded to include David Galas. Under the project name Bleak, work began on the album Vane , which, however, tends in a much harder direction. In return, new tracks were developed for the main Lycia project, for which acoustic guitars were increasingly used. In the line up, reinforced by the singer Tara VanFlower, this material was released in 1995 as a double CD under the name The Burning Circle and Then Dust .

This was followed by the albums Cold (1996) and Estrella (1998), each of which has its own distinctive sound. The EP The Time Has Come and Gone was released under the name Estraya with songs based on ambient soundscapes and acoustic guitars. With the same sound concept, but under the name of the main project Lycia, the album Tripping Back into the Broken Days was released in 2002 .

In October 2003 Lycia separated from their label Projekt Records, two months later their last album, Empty Space, was released . VanPortfleet released the ambient album Beyond the Horizon Line under his name in 2004 . Solo releases by Tara VanFlower (now Tara VanPortfleet) and David Galas also followed.
