The genus Lymnaea is the eponymous genus of the family of mud snails (Lymnaeidae), the superfamily Lymnaeoidea and the subfamily Lymnaeinae, which belong to the subordination water pulmonate snails (Basommatophora) within the lung snails (Pulmonata). The genus Lymnaea also includes the largest native freshwater snail, the European mud snail ( Lymnaea stagnalis ).
Systematics
The systematic scope of the genus is still very controversial. There are three approaches, a "large genus" Lymnaea without sub-genera: all species are listed under the genus Lymnaea (Hubendick 2 ), a "large genus" Lymnaea with sub-genera (Kruglov & Starobogatov 3 ) and a "small genus" Lymnaea with some close ones related but independent genera (= the sub-genera in the intermediate approach) (including Glöer 1 ). The number of valid species is also controversial. The number ranges from well over 100 species in a "large genus" Lymnaea to a minimum of less than a dozen species ("small genus " Lymnaea ). New DNA studies and cross-breeding experiments have shown that populations previously identified as Lymnaea stagnalis are in fact separate species. This should put the number of only about a dozen for the "small genus" Lymnaea into question. Due to the uncertainty in the scope of the genus, it is therefore very difficult to characterize the genus.
