Under lymph metastasis refers to the spread of secondary tumors ( metastases ) of a tumor on the efferent lymph vessels in regional and more distant lymph nodes .

The so-called sentinel lymph nodes, into which the metastases are first transported along the physiological pathway, play an important role in breast cancer . In lung cancer , the mediastinal lymph nodes are particularly affected, while in colon cancer , lymph nodes located next to the main artery are often affected. By examining these and nearby lymph nodes, u. a. find out how far the metastasis has progressed.
