She also taught creative writing at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

In 1994 she received the Shamus Award for Satan's Lambs . In order to add authenticity to her accounts, she visited crime scenes and performed autopsies with police officers from the Cincinnati Homicide Squad and with police officers and private detectives in Kentucky.

Hightower says he loves Zydeco music, films, small sports cars and tame riding horses. She is a full-time writer, dog owner as a hobby, loves dancing and canoeing. The last known places of residence were Lexington, Kentucky (1999) and California (2002).
