Lyot is an impact crater south of the lunar front , southwest of Mare Australe , southeast of Oken crater and northwest of smaller Jeans crater . The rim of the crater is heavily eroded, the interior is largely filled with lava and therefore flat except for the secondary craters B, D and E.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1964 after the French astronomer Bernard Ferdinand Lyot .
