Más País (German "Mehr Land") is a progressive political party in Spain , which was founded in September 2019 by Íñigo Errejón .
history
founding
After the formation of a left coalition between the Partido Socialista Obrero Español and the left-wing populist party Podemos failed and the Spanish parliamentary elections were called in November 2019 , Errejón, a former founding member of Podemos, founded his own party to run for this election. The politician was already active in the environment of the local election platform of the Madrid mayor Manuela Carmena Más Madrid and had previously broken with Podemos. Formally, it was not about a new establishment, but a renaming of Más Madrid, expanding its range of action from regional to national level. The party's nationwide campaign will contribute to further fragmentation of the vote in the left, according to political observers. Polls saw the party with around 5% of the vote.
According to his own statement, Errejón wanted to counteract the feared frustration of left voters and offer them an opportunity to vote for a left party, apart from the PSOE and Podemos.
Shortly after it was founded, the party reached an agreement with the Equo party to run together in some constituencies.
The alliance "Desbloquear, avanzar, Más País" is the election slogan (in German roughly: Release the blockade, make progress, more land)
Spanish general election 2019
When he first took part in the election, Más País immediately entered the Spanish House of Representatives. In the nationwide elections in November 2019 , the party won 5.64% in Madrid and 6.93% in Valencia, bringing Más País to three seats (two in Madrid, one in Valencia). Nationwide, the party received 2.40% of all votes, making it the seventh strongest party in Spain. It should be noted that the party could only be elected in 18 of the 59 Spanish constituencies. However, since surveys before the election predicted higher mandate wins for Más País, chairman Errejón was dissatisfied despite the parliamentary entry.
