history

In 1918 personalities from Ostrava founded an association at the instigation of the mayor Jan Prokeš , which should set up a worthy Czech theater in the city. On August 12, 1919, the Moravian-Silesian National Theater opened with Smetana's Bartered Bride . At the beginning it played in the City Theater (Antonín Dvořák Theater) and in the Národní dům (since 1954 Jiří Myron Theater). The German ensemble moved from the Antonín Dvořák Theater to the German House in 1920, after which the Antonín Dvořák Theater was the seat of the Moravian-Silesian National Theater until 1939. The theater has played in both houses since 1945. In 1948 it was renamed Státní divadlo v Ostravě , and in 1995 it returned to its original name.
