Malt brewers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mälzenbräuer were Königsberg citizens, in whose houses beer could be brewed.

background

Anyone in Königsberg i. Pr. Owned or rented a home with brewing justice generally became very wealthy. These malt brewers did not brew themselves, but left it to brewers and malters to their own guild . Most of the malt brewers did not live in the Löben . In this (rather proletarian) district of Königsberg they led a very pleasant life. In educated circles it was believed that only soldiers or monks could lead a comparable life:

"Aut miles, aut monachus, aut Mälzenbräuer im Löbenicht."

- Koenigsberg saying

The saying was a modification of the maxim of Ladislaus of Naples and Cesare Borgia : "Aut Caesar aut nihil." ("Either Caesar or nothing").
