Mémorial du Souvenir
The Mémorial du Souvenir is a war museum and memorial site in Dunkirk dedicated to the Battle of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo .
The museum is located in Bastion 32 of the Dunkirk coastal fortification from 1874 on Rue des Chantiers de France. The bastion served as the headquarters of French and Allied English troops during the Battle of Dunkirk in May and June 1940 during World War II .
The battle is presented in the 700 square meter museum with general staff maps, display boards with texts and pictures as well as showcases with weapons and equipment, free-standing military material and original finds from the battlefield. In addition, a 15-minute documentary film with numerous original recordings is offered to visitors alternately in French and English.
History of the museum
In 1969, an exhibition on the Battle of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo was put together and opened by then French Defense Minister Michel Debré . The exhibition was later stored in the basement of the Musée des Beaux Arts in Dunkirk and was then forgotten. In 2000, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the battle, the exhibition was redesigned and presented in Bastion 32.
