The Monk Kotkäfer ( Onthophagus coenobita ) is a beetle from the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae) and the subfamily Scarabaeinae .

features

The beetles reach a size of 6–10 mm. The head and pronotum are bronze or greenish. The light brown elytra are speckled with dark spots. The pronotum is hairy comparatively long. The males have horn-shaped or hump-shaped outgrowths on the head.

Occurrence and way of life

The species occurs in the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. In the east their distribution area extends to Central Asia . The coprophage beetles feed on various types of droppings, in particular human and pet droppings (horse droppings, sheep droppings, cattle and pig droppings). The beetles also eat carrion, rotting mushrooms and detritus . The beetles dig breeding chambers in the ground near piles of excrement, which they fill with the excrement and in which the hatched beetle larvae develop. The adult beetles are usually seen from April to October.
