Monads is a funeral doom band founded in 2011 .

history

Monads were officially founded in January 2011 by Hans Cools. Cools, who already appeared as a live musician before the founding of Monads through appearances in the context of Extreme and  Depressive Black Metal , among others with Hypothermia , Trist and Toorn , gathered other, similarly experienced musicians to found it. Cools began to form the group two years before the official founding and to force a band. Like Cools, the musicians recruited themselves from the  black and extreme metal scene. With the guitarist Gorik van Droogenbroeck, the drummer Dimitry Degrieck and the bassist Jan Frederix, Monad's first line-up made use of the full live line-up of the one-man project Toorn founded by Droogenbroeck in 2011. Rob Polon of Fractured Insanity joined the group as singer . In September the group thus assembled released their first demo Intellectus Iudicat Veritatem . The demo recorded in August was limited to 50 copies. The demo sold out quickly, according to Cools. Several labels tried to get the group to officially release the demo. Intellectus Iudicat Veritatem was released as a download via Bandcamp and as an album in 2012 via Ordo MCM . The Intellectus Iudicat Veritatem , produced by Cools and Droogenbroek, was well received by reviewers.

After completing the demo recording, the group began the process of writing the official debut album and performed with bands such as Lifelover , IXXI , Cult of Erinyes , Ondskapt , The One , Somrak , Black Oath , Castle and Darkening . In 2014 Droogenbroeck left Monads and was replaced by François Breulet from Cult of Erinyes. After further appearances and an extended creative process, which Cools describes as part of a stressful phase of life, the group completed the album IVIIV in 2017. The album was mastered by Greg Chandler of Esoteric and produced by Olmo Lipani of We All Die (Laughing) . Stijn van Cauter from Until Death Overtakes Me and The NULLL Collective was responsible for the layout, while Billy Bayou from Glorior Belli designed the cover. IVIIV was released in December 2017 via Aesthetic Death Records and received international recognition as a result of the release. The album was often positively highlighted in reviews.

style

The music of Monads is attributed to the Death and Funeral Doom. The music is emphasized atmospheric, slow and tough, but offers little variety.

Cools names the atmospherically monotonous and slow sound of the group as the intended effect of the music. The monotonous and deep riffing is paraphrased as "a series of individual chords that are struck every three or four seconds". This guitar game would be loosened up with "minimalist acoustic bridges". According to the style, the singing is mainly based on  guttural growling .

Cools names performers of funeral and death doom, black and depressive black metal and post-rock as important influences. Including Esoteric , Evoken , Loss , Worship , Mornful Congregation , Nortt , Abyssic Hate , Silencer , early Shining , Burzum , Daturah , Red Sparowes and God Is an Astronaut .
