God Is an Astronaut is an Irish post-rock - band from Glen of the Downs, County Wicklow . It was founded in 2002, the name of the band comes from a quote from the movie Nightbreed . The band gained notoriety due to their open anti-war stance and extraordinary live performances.

history

The brothers Torsten and Niels Kinsella played in various local bands before they started the band together with drummer Lloyd Hanney. In 2002, the debut album The End of the Beginning was released on the band's record label Revive Records . The 2003 singles The End of the Beginning and From Dust to the Beyond received airplay on the music channel MTV, as did the single Fragile released in 2004 . The second album All Is Violent, All Is Bright was released in 2005 and was the only album of the band so far to place in the Irish album charts . The 2006 EP A Moment of Stillness also hit the charts. For their third album, Far From Refuge , the band played a sold-out European tour that took them to Moscow . In Istanbul they performed at a festival in front of 25,000 spectators. The tour through the USA turned into a fiasco because the band's equipment was stolen. The fourth studio album was released in 2008, the fifth in May 2010.

The band's live performances, especially in the early phase, were characterized by extensive lighting effects and the use of self-produced music videos for each track.
