Castle is an American rock and metal band from San Francisco , California that formed in 2009.

history

The band was formed in 2009. In 2011, the German label Ván Records released their debut album In Witch Order , which was voted Album of the Year by Norwegian Metal Hammer . The Roadburn Festival named the group Newcomer of the Year. Shortly thereafter, the second album Blacklands appeared , where it was released in North America on Prosthetic Records . To promote the album, the group held over 200 gigs, including with The Sword , Conan , Intronaut and Pentagram . The group was also seen at the Roadburn Festival and the Desertfests in London and Berlin . At Sharkbite Studios in Oakland , California , a new album was recorded with producer Billy Anderson , who had already produced Blacklands . After the release of Under Siege in 2014, on which the group consists of singer and bassist Elizabeth Blackwell, guitarist and singer Mat Davis and drummer Al McCartney, tours of the US, Europe and Canada followed . Among other things, the band could be seen at the Heavy Days in Doomtown Fest in Copenhagen in 2015 and at the Acherontic Arts Fest in Oberhausen . In June 2016, the band was represented at the Maryland Doom Fest before they went on a three-week US tour in July and August that included 32 performances. In July, the album Welcome to the Graveyard was released via Ván Records, which was recorded with producer Billy Anderson at Type Foundry Studios in Portland , Oregon , in the winter of 2015. The publication was also followed by appearances in Canada and Europe.

style

According to Rock Hard's Mandy Malon , the band plays a mix of heavy and doom metal. In an interview with her, Mat Davis stated that the song Hammer and the Cross from Welcome to the Graveyard was influenced by Black Sabbaths Born Again , Dios Holy Diver and Mötley Crües Too Fast for Love . The creation of the songs would often be influenced by books and films. Veil of Death is based on a book about Vikings Say , Amphora of Aleister Crowley had Traitors Rune and Transcendental Magic by Eliphas Levi affected. Thorsten Dörtling had reviewed the album an issue earlier. He highlighted the female singing as a special feature, which, however, could be perceived as too strict and weird for some people. Elizabeth Blackwell sings with a "slightly smeared rabble organ" while Mat Davis sings with "aggressively burped vocals". Marc Halupczok from Metal Hammer stated in his review of In Witch Order that the music was somewhat comparable to that of The Devil's Blood . The music sounds similar to that of the early Black Sabbath. Blackwell's singing sounds clear, cool and distant, the lyrics are occult and inspired by Charles Baudelaire and William Blake and the sound of the songs is dull and creaky. Halupczok described the music as a mix of 1970s rock and doom metal.
