Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst (born November 1, 1743 in Petershagen , † November 5, 1807 in Berlin ) was a German naturalist and entomologist . He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Pythagoras zum Flammenden Stern in Berlin.

His parents were Nikolaus Herbst (1705–1773), from Derenburg near Halberstadt - senior preacher in Petershagen and superintendent in the Principality of Minden - and his wife Anna Elisabeth von Oven (1721–1746). His mother was the daughter of the lawyer in Wesel Johann von Oven and his wife Maria Anna Mechthild de Souches and sister of the Prussian major general Friedrich von Oven .

Life

He studied theology in Halle and then worked as an educator. His last job was with the councilor and knight Weitzel in Berlin. In 1769 he was ordained and came as a field preacher in Infantry Regiment No. 23 , after a few years he moved to the Berlin cadet institute . After that he probably went to Reppen in the Sternberg district as a preacher , but in 1782 he became the third deacon at the Church of St. Mary in Berlin. There he became second deacon in 1798 and archdeacon in 1805 until his death .

In addition, Herbst was an enthusiastic zoologist and dealt extensively with the systematics of insects. He had an extensive collection of insects and published a number of important books. Among other things, he was a member of the Society of Friends of Natural Sciences in Berlin .

He married Euphrosyne Luise Sophie Waldschmidt (1742–1805) in Berlin in 1770 , a daughter of Hofrat Philbert Libert Waldschmidt and Catharine Juliana Weitzel . No children are known.
