The Mühlengrabenbrücke is a bridge over the Kettwiger Mühlengraben, a tributary of the Ruhr , in Kettwig , Essen .
Building
The stone arch bridge dates from 1786. In its three circular segment arches, it spans from 8.02 to 10.15 meters, a total length of around 36 meters and a width of 3.8 meters. The 93 cm high stone parapets are 50 cm wide. The former road bridge is now used as a pedestrian bridge.
history
A wooden bridge over the Ruhr in Kettwig was first mentioned as early as 1282, about four hundred meters east of the current location. It was replaced in the 15th or 16th century by a stone bridge around its current location, which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War in 1635. Then a wooden pedestrian bridge was built over the mill moat, with carts having to use a ford . The main arm of the Ruhr was crossed by ferry .
In 1786 Bernhard II , Abbot of Werden Abbey , had the wooden bridge replaced by today's stone bridge made of Ruhr sandstone rubble, which carts could also drive over. The abbot's coat of arms is depicted above the central arch of the bridge.
Presumably, the Mühlengrabenbrücke was originally planned as part of a bridge spanning the entire width of the river, but it did not get beyond the execution from the north bank to the island between Mühlengraben and the main arm of the Ruhr. In 1985 the Mühlengrabenbrücke was placed under monument protection.
