Munich Volksbühne

The Volksbühne München eV is an association founded in 1918 with the purpose of providing inexpensive access to cultural events in and around Munich . For this purpose, framework agreements are concluded with theaters and organizers, which enable members of the association to enjoy reduced admission prices.

In the years 1899 and 1900, the later founder of the association, Georg Mauerer , wrote his communications for the Münchner Volksbühne association , which can be regarded as intellectual preparatory work for the establishment of a Volksbühne in Munich. Mauerer, who with Gerhart Hauptmann was involved in founding the Berlin Volksbühne , recognized that “the working people need more than bread”.

The actual association was founded on September 29, 1918 with the performance of Georg Kaiser's play The Citizens of Calais . With the monthly magazine Münchner Volksbühne , the association reached wide sections of the population. A first highlight was the anniversary exhibition and a lecture in the Munich Tonhalle in 1928. Honorary members at this time were writers such as Ricarda Huch , Thomas Mann , composers such as Joseph Schmid and Richard Trunk as well as employees of the city.

The wartime and hostility in the period of National Socialism caused an interruption in the period from 1933 to 1945, which was resumed immediately after the end of the war.

Today the Volksbühne is the oldest visitor organization in the city of Munich. The aim of the organization as a non-profit association is still to win many Munich citizens for the theater. The social task of guaranteeing loyal visitors to the theater at reduced prices has remained up to the present day.
