Munster Kohlberg
The Münsterkohlberg was the southwestern part of the Inderevier in the Aachen coal mining area . It was essentially in what is now the Stolberg district of Münsterbusch . Both locations owe their name to the long membership of the Kornelimünster Imperial Abbey .
Hard coal was mined here in Pingen as early as 1500 . The brothers Gerlach and Wilhelm Beck received a concession for commercial coal mining in 1591 . Zander Morenou obtained the mining rights in 1608, before production was temporarily stopped around 1650. In 1780 a new concession was granted to Baron Rudolf Konstanz Geyr von Schweppenburg . In 1793 Johann Joseph de Berghes and Thomas D. Ehlers leased the mine .
In 1830 John James Cockerill acquired the mining rights in association with the Siegwart brothers and operated the so-called Grube James until 1891 .
