history

The port is dominated by Fort Chambray , which was commissioned by Jacques François de Chambray (1687–1756) in 1749 . From here the ferries run to the main island of Malta .

The first use of a ferry took place in 1241. At that time, Mġarr was an inconspicuous harbor where only small ships anchored. The port was expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries, most recently in 1969. The first regular passenger traffic between Malta and Gozo was established in 1885. The fare was 8 pence plus a penny levy to finance the service in the church of Mġarr, where the priest prayed for the passengers to cross safely.

In 2002, the construction of a new reception building with underground car parking space began, which was opened in 2008. The new ferry terminal can handle 600 passengers and 200 vehicles at the same time. The planned cost of one million Maltese lira had increased thirteenfold in the end.

Mġarr is Gozo's largest fishing port. There is also a marina there .
