example

The term of office of the German Federal Chancellor and his cabinet minister ends in accordance with Article 69 (2) of the Basic Law whenever a newly elected Bundestag meets. However, the Federal President can oblige the Federal Chancellor and his government to continue business operations in accordance with paragraph 3 of the same article until a successor has been appointed. During this time, the activities of the Federal Government are limited to a necessary minimum, which means that no more political work takes place. Only in 1974 was there an exception to this practice with the immediate resignation of Willy Brandt ; in this case his deputy, Walter Scheel , was entrusted with the continuation of the business.
