MAA-1 piranha
The MAA-1 Piranha ( M íssil A r- A r 1 ) is the first air-to-air missile developed in-house by Brazil . It is used by the Brazilian Air Force and Navy .
The first studies were carried out at the end of the 1970s, but development at Mectron only began in the mid-1990s . The MAA-1 has an infrared seeker head, which is supplied by the South African company Denel , and a solid rocket motor. From the outside it looks very similar to the Python III . The Piranha is a short-range missile with fire-and-forget capabilities. It can be used by the AT-26 Xavante , F-5 , Dassault Mirage III and AMX .
In March 2007 Denel and the Brazilian Air Force signed a contract in which the MAA-1 will be replaced by the A-Darter from 2015 and both sides will share the development costs.
