The MAN F8 is a hood control truck from MAN . It was launched on the market in 1951 and was MAN's first heavy truck after the Second World War. Production ended in 1963 and most of the last vehicles were exported. MAN built the F8 with three different wheelbases, either a flatbed or a tipper body was available ex works. Special structures such as furniture cases (see picture on the right) put external companies on the F8 chassis. Equipped with an 11.6 liter V8 engine of 180 DIN PS (132 kW), the F8 was the most powerful truck in the MAN range at the time.

technology

The F8 is a two-axle, long- hood truck with a ladder frame that is only available with rear-wheel drive . It has rigid axles at the front and rear , each suspended from two longitudinal semi-elliptical leaf springs without shock absorbers. The wheels in dimensions 8.5–20 are cast from steel. The tires are 13–20 eHD sizes; the rear axle has double tires. A spring-loaded brake operated by compressed air acts on all wheels; the brake drums of the rear wheels are larger than those of the front wheels. Steering is done with a ZF single finger steering; the F8 is only available as a left-hand drive.

The drive power is transmitted from the engine via a dry single-disk clutch to the mechanical and unsynchronized six - speed claw gear type ZF AK 6–75 that is locked to the engine . This gearbox is shifted using the MAN guide shift scheme, in which the gears, unlike in an H shift, are superimposed and must be engaged with an up and down movement of the shift lever.

The engine of the F8, type D 1548 M , is a water-cooled and wet sump lubricated V8 diesel. With a cylinder bore of 115 mm and a piston stroke of 140 mm, the total displacement is 11,633 cm 3 . The crankcase and the two cylinder blocks are cast in one piece, the two one-piece cylinder heads are removable. The D 1548 M has overhead valves and wall-distributing direct injection , which means that the fuel is injected into the spherical combustion chamber in the piston ( MAN center ball process ). The continuous output is 180 hp DIN (132 kW) at 2000 min -1 stated, the maximum torque is 686.5 N · m at 1300 min -1 . The lowest specific fuel consumption of the engine is 224.3 g / kWh; At an engine speed of 2580 min −1 , the F8 consumes 20 l of fuel per 100 km, and its top speed is 60 km / h.
