Markal

The / The Markal, also Marcal or Mercal and Mercois, was a grain measure in the French-East Indian Pondichery , on the island of Ceylon and the Coromandel coast . The measure was volume and weight measure and very different in values.

Volume measure

  • 1 Marcal = 2.9913 liters (around 3 liters)
  • 1 Marcal = 8 Puddies = 64 Ollucks = 619.56 Parisian cubic inches = 12.29 liters
  • Madras : 400 Marcals = 80 Parahs = 1 Garce = 4916 liters
  • 12 markals = 1 gallon = 1809.557 Parisian cubic inches = 35.895 liters
  • 16 markals = 1 doba (measure for oil and butter) = 47.856 liters
  • 24 markals = 1 canam (measure for oil seeds) = 71.79 liters

Weight measure

  • Pondichery: 600 Marcals = 1 Garce ≈ 12 pounds (French) of wheat
