MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
The MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory ( CSAIL ) of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a research laboratory for computer science , created by the merger of the 2003 Laboratory for Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab developed. It is located in the MIT Stata Center and is the largest cross-departmental research institute at MIT.
It comprises around 60 research groups (2011) in the main areas of artificial intelligence (AI), systems (e.g. databases, software engineering, computer architecture, networks) and theory.
One of the forerunners is the Artificial Intelligence Lab, which had its roots in the MAC project (originally for Mathematics and Computation) founded in 1963, in which the first time-sharing systems were developed, among other things . In 1970 the AI group under Marvin Minsky spun off in the AI Lab , the rest formed the Laboratory of Computer Science (LCS).
They also host the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
