The MRCC Rome (Maritime Rescue Coordination Center Rome) is the sea rescue control center (MRCC) for the sea areas around Italy , i.e. for large parts of the western and central Mediterranean Sea . She receives all emergency calls from ships in this area and coordinates all necessary rescue operations.

The MRCC Rome is operated by the Italian Coast Guard . At the MRCC Rome, the position of ships, their capacities and sea endurance are brought together in order to coordinate sea rescue operations as effectively as possible. The MRCC Rome is responsible for a sea area roughly the size of Germany.

Like all MRCCs, the MRCC Rom can be alerted in the following ways:

  • EPIRB distress beacon (satellite)
  • GMDSS Inmarsat radio data transmission (satellite)
  • Inmarsat (C 424-744-220 = MRCC X), Iridium, Thuraya (satellite phone)

On the Italian coast there are 14 Marine Rescue Sub Centers (MRSC), local rescue centers that take on the coordination in their coastal area and are in constant contact with the MRCC. The geographically closest MRCC is the MRCC Malta .

development

The MRCC Rome was established in the 1960s. With the increase in sea emergencies caused by migration across the Mediterranean from the 2000s onwards, the MRCC Rome had to increasingly coordinate rescues after drastic and devastating sea emergencies of refugee boats. In response, Italy started Operation Mare Nostrum in 2013 , in which the MRCC also served as the coordination point. After the European states refused to support the rescue operation, which was purely financed and carried out by Italy, with their own funds, the operation was ended in 2014.

The 22 European nations, with around 1,300 soldiers and civilian personnel carried Frontex - operation "Triton" aimed at the prevention of human trafficking. The Operation Headquarters was on board the Operation flagship . On February 1, 2018, it was replaced by Operation Themis .

The rescue missions of Operation "Triton" and "Themis" as well as those of civilian ships of non-governmental organizations and sea rescue organizations (e.g. Doctors Without Borders / SOS Méditerranée ) are coordinated by the MRCC Rome.
