Cherry Hinton is a suburb of Cambridge in Cambridgeshire .

history

Until 1911 Cherry Hinton belonged to the Flendish administrative area, which was 826 hectares in size. In 1911, 134 hectares of this administrative area were incorporated into the Cambridge administrative area and in 1934 it was incorporated into the Cambridge urban boundaries, so Cherry Hinton has ceased to be an independent administrative entity since then.

Source of the Cherry Hinton Brook

The name Cherry was first recorded in 1576, probably because cherry trees were in abundance. The early settlement consisted of a northern area around a church and a southern area around a mill, separated by marshland , until the 19th century . Further marshland to the west of the settlement separated it from the city of Cambridge due to flooding in winter so that drainage began in the 19th century. There were several streams. They were covered in the 20th century so that with the Cherry-Hinton-Bach, a tributary of the Cam , only one that was visible above ground remained. The source of this brook, which was channeled in the early 20th century, is popularly known as the Tomb of the Gogmagog .

In an archaeological excavation in 1894, various traces of the Iron Age were found with remains of ceramics and round huts. Around 110 BC there was a Roman court on the nearby hill, which was burned down in the 2nd century. The barrows from the Bronze Age were used again for burials in the 7th century. Early traffic routes were built over from the 18th century. In 1086 there were 41 farms. In 1522/23 there were 43 households. In 1664 there were 74 households. Due to the development of the suburb, the population increased from 869 to 1537 between 1881 and 1891. In 1921 it was 4,269. In 1951 it was 5,994.

Gas lighting was installed in Hinton in the early 20th century, which was replaced by electric light in the 1950s.
