Manufacturing Resources Planning
The MRP II concept ( Manufacturing Resource Planning ) developed by Oliver Wight, among other things, puts additional planning levels ahead of the production program planning (see Material Requirements Planning ). Business planning and sales planning implement the long-term strategies for production. The product range is forecast and planned on a rough level (product group level, monthly grid) and compared with the rough capacity data (for example on machine group level). These plans are continuously revised on a rolling basis.
Put simply: this concept is about long-term and more strategic planning. So it is not only based on the production program planning, but further planning levels are added.
The American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) defines MRPII as follows:
- "MRPII is a method for planning all resources of a production company. Ideally, operational planning is done in units of measure and value planning in dollars. It has simulation capabilities to answer the question" What if? ". MRPII consists of a number of interlinked numbers Functions: Business planning, sales and operations planning, production planning and execution support systems for capacity and material. The results of these systems are integrated into the business plan , Procurement plan, the transport cost plan and the inventory projections, all expressed in dollars. MRP II is a direct extension of the MRP which has been expanded to include capacity calculation . "
Long-term and strategic planning becomes more important in MRP II, it begins with business planning and the sales plan. Planning gains more weight than control. The next planning level, the production program, is then the starting point for the planning steps to be carried out within the MRP I concept with their separation between quantity and schedule planning.
It is critical to note that MRP II was one of the first successful buzzwords in the software industry. In many areas, minor expansions of the known PPS applications with hierarchical planning modules were sufficient, of course combined with an inauguration act on MRP II.
