Winnetou's will

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winnetou's testament is the title of a text that Karl May wanted to write but could not realize before his death.

At Karl May

Shortly before his death, Winnetou tells his blood brother Old Shatterhand that he has made a will and buried it at the foot of his father's grave. Old Shatterhand holds these records - in "Winnetou III" - but can only read a small part before they are taken from him by his opponent Santer and destroyed when he dies.

Years later - in "Winnetou IV" - the aged Old Shatterhand comes back there and, inspired by a clue, digs deeper into the same place where he found the first will. He now finds many notebooks written by Winnetou that he takes with him. From this part of the Apache legacy only excerpts and an accompanying letter are 'cited' in "Winnetou IV", since Karl May apparently intended to add at least one more after "Winnetou IV" at the time he wrote "Winnetou IV" Publish volume titled "Winnetous Testament". However, this intention was never put into practice. Even notes or preliminary stages are not known.

Other authors

Between 1999 and 2006, the Recklinghausen writer Jutta Laroche and the Hamburg author Reinhard Marheinecke tried to close this gap. Jutta Laroche wrote the (autobiographical) parts of the text "written" by Winnetou in eight volumes; Reinhard Marheinecke took on the role of reading Old Shatterhand and the parts of the framework story. All books have around 250 pages and were published by CBK Productions in Hamburg.

The Austrian Karl May researcher Anton Haider also left behind an undated 31-page typescript with the title "Winnetous Testament". This text was published in several continuations in the Vienna Karl May letters (from issue 1/2010).
