The file msconfig.exe , entitled System Configuration, is a native configuration program for Microsoft Windows , which can be started with the command line command msconfig . The program partially allows the configuration of the system start and the administration of automatic starts of various programs and system services .

History and implementation

The automatic start of various programs and services could be managed in earlier Windows versions with the help of AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS . msconfig replaces these files and provides a graphical user interface. With the exception of Windows 2000, the file is provided natively, with Service Pack 2 for Windows XP its functionally expanded. The range of functions of the program differed slightly within the Windows operating system versions.

Functions

The program offers the user the option to set the start mode of the operating system . A diagnostic system start can be selected here, in which only the most necessary devices and services are loaded; this option is mostly used to troubleshoot startup problems. The system starts of other operating systems can also be managed, and a start without a graphical user interface (GUI) can also be initiated. A menu item deals with the management of programs and services that are to be started automatically . Msconfig also provides program shortcuts for various Windows settings, such as the user account control or the Windows Security Center .
