Funded by the National Science Foundation. Workshops are held here on a regular basis, four of which cover a whole semester on key topics (two of them at the same time). Every year 20 to 30 post-doctoral researchers are accepted. There are no permanent faculty members other than administrative staff.

One of the private donors is former mathematics professor (one of the discoverers of the Chern-Simons theory) and hedge fund founder James Simons . The MSRI is also committed to public relations. Classical music concerts take place regularly in the Simons Auditorium. Also known in Berkeley are public talks by Robert Osserman with artists who are related to mathematics such as the comedian Steve Martin , the playwright Tom Stoppard , the composer Philip Glass . The MSRI also works with playwrights in Berkeley.
