Scale plane

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scale level denotes a definition for the consideration of a section of the earth's surface according to a relative room size . Terms such as “local”, “zonal” or “global” designate a respective scale level. It is intended to enable a comparative idea and is used for communication in the various specialist areas of geography  - particularly in political geography , but also in ecology .

The delimitation is mostly fuzzy and related to the levels used. A mental classification according to area sizes is only possible if it is a consideration that places several levels next to one another.

Although the terms are not always clearly defined, frequently used terms can be broken down as follows:

  • global - affecting the entire earth
  • geozonal  - belt-shaped spaces around the earth between the poles
  • regional - related to large areas of the earth's surface
  • national - within the boundaries of certain states
  • local - small-scale areas of the earth's surface

There are no fixed rules for the absolute area sizes. Depending on the author, a local scale can range from a few square meters to hundreds of square kilometers. This depends on the context. Werner Bätzing from the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg suggests the following levels of scale for the regions of Europe :

  • Microregion - larger than municipalities, but mostly smaller than Austrian or German federal states
  • Mesoregion - about the size of the aforementioned federal states to small European states
  • Macro-region - large sub-areas of Europe, e.g. B. divided into 10 sub-rooms

Bätzing generally advocates a clear definition of the terms.
