history

The Church of Maaria

The Maaria area has been inhabited since the Iron Age. In the middle of the 15th century, a stone church dedicated to the Virgin Mary (hence the name Maaria ) was built in the village of Räntamäki . The parish was called Räntämäki and also included Paattinen as a chapel community. The Maaria parish was founded in 1868 when the administration of the rural parishes was separated from the church administration. It had an area of 99.9 km² and, in addition to the actual core area of Maaria, comprised a few exclaves north of Paattinen and the island of Hirvensalo in the archipelago south of Turku. In 1944 Hirvensalo was added to the city of Turku, and in 1967 the entire Maaria municipality was incorporated into Turku.
