Hirvensalo [ ˈhirvɛnsɑlɔ ] is a 12.8 km² island in the archipelago off the southwest coast of Finland . It belongs to the city of Turku and is directly in front of the city center. From the islands Ruissalo in the north and Satava and Kakskerta the south Hirvensalo is also only by narrow Sunde separately. In the west lies the open lake area Airisto .

Hirvensalo was long sparsely populated and covered with deciduous forests. Especially since the 1980s, new residential areas have emerged on the island, so that Hirvensalo has developed a suburban character and today has around 7,000 inhabitants. Hirvensalo belongs to the district of Hirvensalo-Kakskerta and is divided into the districts of Friskala , Haarla , Illoinen , Jänessaari , Kaistarniemi , Kukola , Lauttaranta , Maanpää , Moikoinen , Oriniemi , Papinsaari , Pikisaari , Särkilahti and Toijainen .

The first written mention of Hirvensalo comes from the year 1336. Originally the island belonged as an exclave to the municipality of Maaria north of Turku . In 1944 Hirvensalo was incorporated into Turku.
