Ruissalo [ ˈrui̯sˌsɑlo ] ( Swedish : Runsala ) is a Finnish island in the Baltic Sea . It is located in the archipelago off the city of Turku . It is also one of the districts of Turku.

geography

Ruissalo is located west of the city center between the Pansio district on the mainland and Hirvensalo Island . It is connected to the mainland by a bridge.

With a length of about six kilometers and an average width of about one kilometer, Ruissalo is one of the larger islands in the Turku archipelago. It is covered by forest in the north and west; one of the oldest oak stands in Finland is located there. In the east of the island there are wooded areas and grassland.

use

The island serves primarily as a recreational area. There are only 126 registered residents (as of 2004).

Large parts are in a nature reserve. A station in the south-eastern part of Ruissalo, near the bridge to the mainland, provides information about the island's nature and landscape. At the western tip of Ruissalos there is a campsite , in the center a golf course and the Botanical Garden of the University of Turku . Various excursion restaurants are spread over the island. The residential development is essentially limited to holiday homes on the shore, especially on the south coast.

An example of villas and holiday homes open to the public is Villa Saaro on what is now Camping Ruissalo. In 1850 the western wing with the columned portico was built in Empire style, in 1887 the villa was extended by a veranda on its south-western side. This veranda with its decorative wood carvings offers a view of the archipelago. It is the center of attraction of the café, which is well frequented by day-trippers from the city and camping guests. The former historic farm buildings of the villa are now part of the offer on the campsite as guest holiday apartments. On the front facade of the villa, an information board in Finnish reminds of this building history. The villa has been owned by the City of Turku since 1957. The leisure area is connected to the city by a bus line and is well attended in summer.

The Ruisrock rock festival ( record attendance: 71,000) takes place here every year in early summer.
