Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde
The Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde (MNL, also MdNL), German: Society for Dutch Literature , was founded in Leiden in 1766 . The MNL currently has around 1,600 members. New members can only be accepted by electing existing members. Activities extend to research and publications on Dutch literature.
Focus of work
The society has five commissions:
- Language and poetry
- History and Archeology
- History of Dutch Literature
- Publication of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde yearbook
- South Africa
These commissions have the task of organizing meetings and seminars for the public and issuing publications.
Working groups
In addition to the commissions, there are seven so-called working groups that deal with the cultural heritage of the Netherlands and its colonies in an interdisciplinary manner.
- Werkgroep Zeventiende Eeuw (17th century working group)
- Werkgroep 18e Eeuw (18th century)
- Werkgroep 19e Eeuw (19th century)
Other working groups are responsible for biographies, Indian-Dutch literature, Caribbean literature, and for the Nederlandse Boekhistorische Vereniging (Dutch Book History Association), which focuses on maintaining Dutch book culture.
Publications
The Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde regularly publishes a yearbook; also the Tijdschrift voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde (magazine for Dutch language and literature, TNTL for short), which appears four times a year . In addition, the Nieuw Letterkundig Magazijn (New Literature Magazine , NLM for short) appears twice a year and is sent to the members of the society. In 2002, after a survey of the members, a Dutch literary canon was created in cooperation with the Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren .
Library
The Society's library has been a special collection of the Leiden University Library since 1876 . It has more than 100,000 printed works, manuscripts from the Middle Ages to the present day, an archive and various collections. The holdings are accessible via the university's library catalog. In addition, the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde maintains a digital library with works of Dutch literature.
Prices
Every year the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde awards various prizes to writers, poets, scientists, editors and non-fiction authors who have made an outstanding contribution to the Dutch language and literature.
