MacBinary is an archive format for Apple computers running Mac OS Classic , with which the metadata structure of the hierarchical file system can be saved.

The format is similar to that of BinHex , with binary coding being used instead of its ASCII text coding. The filename extension used is usually .bin.

The first version of the format was published in 1985. Two years later, the updated version II came to adapt the format to new features of the Mac OS. With version 8 of Mac OS, further changes were necessary. This led to the release of MacBinary III in 1996.

For Mac OS X, the format has largely been replaced by the .dmg format (Apple Disk Image).
