The Macanese ( Portuguese Macaense , Chinese土生 澳門 人) are an ethnic group originating from Macau , whose ancestors came from the Portuguese , who moved to Macau during the colonial period and, for geographic reasons, to a particular extent with the Chinese , but also with Indians , Sinhalese , Japanese and especially mixed with Malays .

There are around 42,000 members of this ethnic group worldwide, with only 8,000 members actually living in Macau. This ethnic group has the largest communities in the United States with 15,000 members and in Canada with 12,000 members. Around 5000 people live in Portugal and 1000 people of this ethnic group in Hong Kong . The Macanese are a small minority in Brazil with 300 members. The Macanese language was originally Portuguese and Macanese ; today the Macanese living in Macau mainly or additionally speak Cantonese . In contrast to Macanese, the existence of Portuguese is more secure thanks to its status as an official language .
