Macquarie Island Commonwealth Marine Reserve

The Macquarie Island Commonwealth Marine Reserve is a marine reserve that was established on October 27, 1999. The reserve is located 1,500 km southeast of Tasmania in the Pacific Ocean and covers an area of ​​162,000 km². The marine reserve is connected to the Macquarie Island Nature Reserve , which is under the jurisdiction of the Tasmanian government, which includes Macquarie Island , the Small Judge and Clerk Islands , Bishop and Clerk Islands .

Macquarie Island

The Judge and Clerk Islands are about 11 km north of Macquarie Island , and the Bishop and Clerk Islands are about 37 km south. While these small rocks only protrude from the ocean, Macquarie Island is about 34 km long and 5 km wide.

The Macquarie Island region, known as the Region of Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone , extends over 476,000 km² separated from the three mile zone of 370 km (200 nautical miles) around MacQuarie Island .

The north-eastern part of the region extends to the waters of New Zealand of Campbell Iceland and Auckland Islands and northeast to the Australian continental shelf .

Protected areas

The commercial use of Macquarie Island ended in 1933 with the declaration of a protected zone, in 1971 the island came under the jurisdiction of the Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Service and from 1972 under the law of the Commonwealth. In 1978 it was named Macquarie Island Nature Reserve , added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998, and the Macquarie Island Commonwealth Marine Reserve was proclaimed in 1999 .
