The Macrosemiidae are an extinct family of marine bony fish (Osteichthyes). They lived from the Middle Triassic to the Lower Upper Cretaceous . The Macrosemiidae include all genera that are more closely related to Macrosemius than to Callipurbeckia , Semionotus , Lepidotes or Lepisosteus . Many genera were probably reef dwellers.
features
The fish differed from all other bony fish by the strange infraorbitalia (bones around the eyes). The seven infraorbital bones under the eye are folded outwards, the two behind the eye are tubular. The dorsal fin is often elongated or divided into two. In some genera, the scales are missing on the back, around the dorsal fin. The animals were seven to 24 centimeters long.
Systematics
The Macrosemiidae belong to the new fins (Neopterygii), but probably separated from the other Neopterygii very early.
