Madame de Pompadour is the title of a portrait of Madame de Pompadour . The oil painting , commissioned by Louis XV. , was made by the French painter François Boucher (1703–1770) in 1756. The picture is in room XII of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. It has been on permanent loan from the HVB Groupsince 1971.

The main motif is the 37-year-old Madame de Pompadour (1721–1764), a mistress of Louis XV. of France, in the Palace of Versailles . She wears a rich, wide-spread dress and is sitting comfortably on a sofa bed. They surround objects that are typical for them: books, sheet music , drawings and the state seal on the side table, the latter as a sign of their political influence. The extinguished candle, the clock (in the background) and the roses on the floor indicate transience . Her dog "Mimi" is shown below on the left. The roses on the floor and on the table correspond to the trimmings of their robes.

The picture is a snapshot of her everyday life . It conveys her spatial environment, her luxurious lifestyle and presents her as an educated and artistic woman.

The picture is above all a studio work ; Madame de Pompadour was only a model to paint her face.

M me de Pompadour was painted over 20 times; Boucher painted them several times.
