history
The company was founded in 1919 as Burkhardt & Schmidt Garnfabrik. In 1975 the company was renamed Madeira. The name was based on the Portuguese island of the same name , which is known worldwide for its embroidery and oriental royal houses.
Products
The Madeira Group consists of two legally independent divisions that supply industrial companies as well as the specialist craft trade. The parent company Madeira Garnfabrik only supplies production companies. The subsidiary Madeira Garne GmbH, established in 1987, still supplies the international handicraft trade today. There is also Madeira Garnfärberei Gebr. Schmidt GmbH, which acts as a service provider for both companies. The managing directors are the twins Michael and Ulrich Schmidt, with Ulrich Schmidt taking care of the Madeira yarn factory and Michael Schmidt taking care of the Madeira yarns.
Madeira manufactures various machine embroidery threads , sewing threads and hand embroidery threads . In addition, foils, needles, adhesives, fleeces and accessories for specialist embroidery companies are sold. The company is certified according to ISO 9001 , the yarns from Madeira are certified according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100.

The company, headquartered in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, has 17 sales offices in the USA, England, Spain and Portugal. Indonesia, Thailand, India, Turkey, China and Hong Kong. Madeira employs a total of 450 people, 165 of them in Freiburg.
