Madeleine de la Tour d'Auvergne (* 1495 ; † April 28, 1519 in Florence ) from the house of La Tour d'Auvergne was the wife of Lorenzo di Piero de 'Medici and the mother of Caterina de' Medici .

Life

Madeleine de la Tour d'Auvergne was the daughter of Jean III. d'Auvergne , the Count of Auvergne , and Jeanne de Bourbon-Vendôme, the daughter of Jeans VIII. de Bourbon and widow Jeans II. , Duke of Bourbon. After her father's death in 1501, she held the title of Countess of Auvergne until her death in 1519.

Madeleine had prestige with regard to her ancestry, since she led Gottfried von Bouillon under her older ancestors. This was an argument when, through her association with the younger Lorenzo de 'Medici, she became a pledge for the alliance of Pope Leo X and the Crown of France. She married in Amboise on May 13, 1518 and arrived in Florence on September 7 .

Madeleine no longer lived to see her memorability and her legacy in the history of the European dynasties: She died shortly after the birth of her only daughter on April 28, 1519. Lorenzo's husband also died soon after, on May 4, barely two weeks later.

Heritage and importance

Madeleine's daughter Caterina was the last Medici exponent from the line of the elder Cosimo - and marked the extinction of the line in the male line. Hardly the figure of marriage talks, however, she later gained prominence as the queen widow of Henry II and was the first of two French queens from the Medici family.

Madeleine's eldest sister Anne, who had inherited the county of Auvergne , married the Duke of Albany and survived her sister. However, since she also died childless, the county of Auvergne passed to Catherine de Medici.
