Madhu Dandavate

Madhu Dandavate (born January 21, 1924 in Ahmadnagar , Maharashtra , † November 12, 2005 in Mumbai , Maharashtra) was an Indian socialist politician and physicist.

Madhu Dandavate studied at the Royal Institute of Science in Bombay and taught physics at the University of Bombay from 1946 to 1971 . Even as a student he was politically committed to independence and led an independence movement in Goa, Portugal, in 1955 . From 1971 to 1990 he was a member of the Lok Sabha five times . Under Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi he was one of the leaders of the opposition in parliament and during this time (like his wife but separated from her) he was imprisoned for 18 months in 1975. He was Minister of Finance under the government of Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Minister of Railways under Morarji Desai . The Indian people remember him from this time because of the introduction of more comfortable bench seats on the railways. From 1990 and 1996 to 1998 he was Deputy Chairman of the Indian Planning Commission.

He played a leading role in the Konkan Railway Project.

Dandavate, who comes from a Deshastha brahmin family, was married to the famous politician Pramila Dandavate , who died in 2002. Madhu Dandavate died on November 12, 2005 , in Jaslok Hospital in Mumbai, to cancer .

He is the author of several books including Marx and Gandhi .
