Madonna from (castle) Jindřichův Hradec

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Madonna von Jindřichův Hradec (German Madonna von Neuhaus ) is a late medieval panel painting depicting a Madonna and Child surrounded by four evangelists. The picture is framed by small-format scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The picture, probably created by a Bohemian master around 1460, is one of the remarkable medieval sights of the Jindřichův Hradec Castle in Bohemia.

The artist, not known by name, who painted the picture during the reign of Heinrich IV von Neuhaus , Oberstburggraf von Prague, is close to the Soft Style prevailing in his epoch and shows a stylistic connection to the master of Hohenfurth .

The Madonna of Jindřichův Hradec and her master can be seen as a sign that despite the decline in the importance of the so-called Bohemian School of Painting after 1420, a style that was influenced by it in Bohemia continued to exist. Like other works of this group, the Madonna also shows a proximity to the Byzantine formal tradition.
