Madrona Manor is a property dating from the second half of the 19th century and is now used as a bed and breakfast in California's Wine Country , not far from the town of Healdsburg in Sonoma County . The facility is a popular destination and is often used for weddings. The Michelin Guide has consistently awarded the restaurant one star since 2008. In April 1987, Madrona Manor was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

Location and name

Madrona Manor is located on Westside Road in the Dry Creek Valley AVA wine region northwest of Healdsburg. The buildings are built on a small hill overlooking the valley of the small river Dry Creek. From San Francisco , Healdsburg can be reached in around 1 hour 45 minutes on Highway 101 ; It's another five minutes to Madrona Manor.

The name was originally Madrona Knolls Rancho and derives on the one hand from the location on a hill (English knoll ) and the local name Madrona for the American strawberry tree ( Arbutus menziesii ).

Buildings, architecture and use

The two-story carriage house ( Carriage House )

The property consists of a total of seven buildings, five of which are listed as historically relevant on the National Register of Historic Places. A Greek Revival- style cottage from the 1860s is believed to be the oldest building and was previously used as a residential building. The mansion (Engl. Mansion ) is a three-story building, which from 1880 to 1881 in the style of the Empire Second was built. Today it offers nine luxuriously designed rooms for overnight stays. The restaurant, which is also housed in the manor house and has been managed by chef Jesse Mallgren since 1999, received its tenth Michelin star in a row in 2018. Located behind the mansion and architecturally similarly styled carriage house (Engl. Carriage House ) was built simultaneously with the mansion and originally housed stables, workrooms and facilities for coaches. Today there are more rooms available for overnight guests. Two as a "pantry" (dt. Actually feed or pantry ) and "school house" (dt. Schoolhouse called) one-story building in a simpler style complete the ensemble.
