Maenianum

Maenianum referred to a protruding balcony in ancient Rome . The name was derived from the allegedly used by the censor Gaius Maenius in 318 BC. Gallery over the tabernae in the Roman Forum , from which spectators could watch the gladiatorial fights . After that, the tiers in the amphitheater ( Maenianum primum , Maenianum secundum , Maenianum summum ) and the balconies of private houses were also given this name. In late antiquity, porticoed halls with flat roofs were also called Maeniana .
